Jack Petchey Foundation: Achievement Award Scheme

If we manage this well £1800 each year will be spent on improving NLCC while simultaneously encouraging and recognising the efforts of the young people of the club.

Who is Jack Petchey OBE? Born in East London in 1925, Jack grew up with few luxuries and started his working life earning 62p a week. After successfully launching car hire then car sales businesses, Jack moved into property development and became one of Britain’s richest people. His charitable foundation aims to encourage, motivate and inspire young people (aged 11-25) to contribute and achieve within their sports clubs and youth associations.

What is the Achievement Award Scheme? A self administering programme in which young individuals are recognised for their positive contributions and awarded a cheque for £200 each month to spend on their club in the manner of their choosing. In addition to this there is an annual Leader Award made to a nominated and selected adult – we’ll qualify for the Leader Award from October 2007 onwards.

What are the benefits to NLCC? The money must be spent on the club. Although the specifics of how the money is spent will be the choice of the award winners, the effective benefit to the club is a minimum of £1800 per year.

What are the criteria for nominating award winners? To win an award young people “do not need to be the cleverest, the fastest or the best looking” (JP) They do need to be hard working or to have done something positive for others. This could range from cleaning the changing rooms to rolling the square to assisting the coaching of younger players to scoring runs and taking wickets and catches. Nominations can be made either by posting forms into the nominations box in the clubhouse or via email to noutchy2@aol.com

How will this work? We shall be making an award each month commencing April 2007. Ian Noutch will announce a winner (and how money is to be spent) via the Jack Petchey section of the website and through email updates.

What do you need to do? 1. Communicate the details of this scheme to your squads, 2. Encourage the young people themselves to nominate each other (with reasons why!), 3. Make your own nominations, 4. Provide suggestions (where necessary) as to how the money might be spent.

Summary: Open to ages 11-25, £200 per month, managed entirely from within the club (nominations, awards etc), award winners decide how the £200 is spent, additional ‘leader’ award (for adults) after October 2007. Use it or we lose it!
