May Award Winner: Charlie Freeman
Congratulations to Charlie Freeman - the Jack Petchey achievement award winner for May.
In Charlie’s first season of adult cricket he has starred in each of his first 3 games scoring 41 not out, 53 not out and 70. This is a truly outstanding performance and all the more impressive when you consider that Charlie is still only an under 13s cricketer.
In addition to his terrific batting efforts in May Charlie has also been described as a very promising bowler with an excellent attitude and as ‘a dream to captain’.
Well done Charlie, you now have £300 to spend on the club
April 2008: Matt Rosson
Congratulations to Matt Rosson who is our Achievement Award winner for April. Matt was nominated after his impressive debut for the first team in the pre-season fixture against local rivals North Middlesex. Here is an extract from the match report:
..certain to join (the first team squad) in the future is 15 year old Matt Rosson, who made his debut for the 1XI in this match. He fielded well, was enthusiastic and encouraging to his team mates, sent down 6 very tidy overs while the heat was on, and can bat a bit too.
Matt has made consistent progress in recent seasons in both Junior and Adult cricket and is poised to establish himself in the upper echelons of NLCCs senior teams.

March 2008: Andrew Norman
Picking a winner for March was easy – we received multiple nominations for the same candidate!
Here are some extracts from the nominations:
“I would like to nominate Andrew Norman, one of the U17s for the March award. Andrew has worked very hard on his game (off spin) during the winter nets since joining us as an U16 last season, having not previously had formal coaching or played much cricket”.
"He attended the U17 nets, the Senior nets and had additional and extra net sessions and has shown a quiet yet steely determination to improve. His hard work paid off in his debut U17 match v Highgate last Friday evenig in the Cup, when he started with a wicket maiden"
Andrew is 17 and had played only one game of cricket in his life until Friday last. On Friday night, in a Fifteen15 thrash Cup match against Highgate which NLCC won, he bowled his flighted off breaks and ended 3-1-2-15. Two spinner's wickets - a skied catch and a stumping”.
“He deserves recognition for his will to learn and to train. If he sticks with cricket he will get wickets regularly in senior cricket. He is a worthy recipient of the award.”

February 2008: Kirsten Rossouw
Congratulations to Kirsten Rossouw who is our February winner of the Jack Petchey achievement award. Kirsten is one of the star players in NLCC’s girls squad and has been excelling this Winter at indoor cricket. Here is an extract from the nomination submitted by Judith Pedersen:
“I would like to nominate Kirsten Rossouw for her excellent performances in
indoor cricket at the London Youth Games for the February winner of the Jack
Petchey award
Kirsten, representing Haringey, batted magnificently in all 3 qualifying
games reaching 20 not out before retiring. She also opened the bowling
taking wickets and her quick fielding also produced run outs. These
performances enabled Haringey Girls Team to qualify for the Finals at Lords
for the first year ever”

January: Sean Beckett
The first winner of the new increased monthly sum of £300 is Sean Beckett. Sean is a very promising all round cricketer and has shown excellent form in January in the Junior indoor league. Although Sean bowls and fields well it was with the bat that he really shone, top scoring with 27 in the Hornsey game (in an opening stand of 73) and retiring on 32* in the thumping victory over Mill Hill Village. Sean has been described as "a gritty performer" with an "excellent attitude" by his coaches - definitely a player you'd want in your team. Well done and many congratulations to you Sean.
2007 £1000 Leadership Award: Tom Wakeford
Tom Wakeford is the first NLCC winnner of a Jack Petchey Leader Award. This is an award open to club members of any age and Tom now has £1000 to spend on the club. See below for his nomination:
Jack Petchey Foundation Leader Award 2007: Nomination
A total of 7 nominations were received for this award (for 4 separate nominees) Following discussion at a recent North London Cricket Club committee meeting we have decided to put forward Tom Wakeford as our recommended recipient of the leader award. Tom is a 27 year old player in the club’s 1st XI and has recently completed 20 years as a playing member of NLCC. Tom has been a regular first team cricketer for the last 10 years; he is an outstanding bowler - one of the best in the league- a destructive batsman and an improving fielder. He has been the first team’s player of the year in 2 of the last 4 seasons and once again finished as the first team’s leading wicket taker in 2007. He is a positive and encouraging presence on and off the pitch and would be a candidate for the leader award for his playing contribution alone...
However, Tom does a lot more than play well for NLCC. The club’s website is, for instance, largely in existence thanks to Tom’s efforts. He unfailingly updates, oversees and supervises the ongoing development of the site. In 2007 Tom took on the additional duties of Honorary Team Secretary – a difficult and largely thankless task involving hundreds of phone calls and emails each week and the checking of player availability, arranging fixtures and then responding to the inevitable last minute cry offs. Tom did this with persistence, patience and good humour throughout the season contributing to more people than ever getting a game of Saturday cricket. The club put out 6 separate teams on a number of occasions last season, thanks largely to Tom chasing down enough players and ensuring they all arrived at the right time on the right ground to play the right opposition.
In addition to all this Tom has recently taken on an organising role for the Club Dinner. He’ll then be joining Winter nets early in the New Year and then it will be onto the new season – more website improvements, more fixtures to arrange, more players to locate and of course more runs, wickets and catches for North London Cricket Club.
The future of the club is indeed in good hands and Tom Wakeford would be a worthy recipient of NLCC’s 2007 Leader Award.
December: Joe Higgins
Congratulations to Joe Higgins who is our Achievement Award winner for December.
Joe has been a very effective captain of the U/13 A team leading them to the Division 1 title in 2007 (ahead of North Middlesex - well
done lads!) Like all good cricketers Joe is diligent and consistent about practising in the nets and most recently (December 15th) Joe top scored with 46 not out in the indoor league.
Well done and once again congratuations to Joe.
NOVEMBER: Tom Noutch
Congratulations to Tom Noutch who is our Achievement Award winner for November.
In the course of the last 2 years 20 year old Tom has progressed from promising young cricketer to first team star player and he is now an all rounder respected throughout the Middlesex County league. Additionally, he has been an active and effective coach to the junior section of the club on Sunday mornings, a leading figure in the successful summer school coaching, an inspirational captain of North London's academy team and a tireless worker on the ground. Indeed, in November alone he put in many hours of hard work on the man square 'putting it to bed for the Winter'
Well done Tom, this is deserved recognition of your terrific contribution to the club.
OCTOBER: Dan Rosson
I'm pleased to announce Daniel Rosson as the winner of the Jack Petchey Achievement Award for October.
In the course of the 2007 season Dan represented North London at the following levels: U13B, U15A, U17 and the Senior 4th, 5th & 6th XIs. He also went on the U13 tour of Norfolk, helped out by doing some of the scoring duties during cricket week and, most impressively, attended every practice session, indoor and outdoor, throughout the season. Dan has cheerfully and skillfully contributed to each of the team's he's played for and his efforts have been highly valued by team colleagues and coaches alike.
Dan's diligence is already paying off and in the recent indoor Winter league he contributed a stunning 34 runs from just 6 balls!

SEPTEMBER: Shaun Norman
Congratulations to Shaun who is our achievement award winner for September. Shaun enjoyed a fine season finishing as the 5th XI’s leading wicket-taker and then nobly went on to update the 5th XI’s entire season’s results on the club’s website.
Shaun now has £200 to spend on the club. Thank you and well done!
Our August winner (James Battcock) has decided to spend his prize money on purchasing a number of baseball catching mitts (for use in fielding practice and in coaching fielding sessions) and also a portable mini-scoreboard for use when there is more than 1 game in play on the main ground. Thank you James
AUGUST: James Battcock
Congratulations to under 15's player James Battcock who received a number of nominations after his exceptional first game for the club's 1st XI in the Bank Holiday Monday game against Paddington. James batted beautifully on his way to scoring 45 (including 2 large sixes) and fielded very well too (including a run out from the boundary)
James now has £200 to spend on the club. Well Done!
Keep the nominations coming - there will be an update on how the July and August monies have been spent included in the September award.
JULY: Jessica Black
Congratulations to Jessica who is both a terrific all round cricketer and a real team player. Jessica was nominated by her coach Jawaid Luqmani, an extract from Jawaid’s nomination appears below.
“Jessica Black captained the girl’s team in the last match of the season and although narrowly defeated by the Boys Under 9’s team, she showed real leadership in her decisions, analysing the strengths of her own side, evaluating who would be best at batting and bowling, setting the field with no assistance from others, and importantly was careful to ensure not only that no one was left out, but that each of her team members was encouraged to do their best. Importantly for any aspiring captain she ensured that she neither opened the batting nor the bowling, despite being a clear contender as one of the best all-rounders on her team. This selflessness and ability to identify the best in others in my view is in keeping with the true spirit of the game”

Jermaine Scantlebury, the award winner for June, spent his prize money on a new cover for use on the Ferme Park square. It’s great we now have this, thank you Jermaine and let’s hope we don’t need to use it for the rest of the Summer!

JUNE: Jermaine Scantlebury.
On the 9th June 2007 in a 3rd team fixture away to Bessborough Jermaine Scantlebury returned the following figures: 15 overs, 2 maidens, 8 wickets for 64 runs conceeded. A truly outstanding performance and due reward for 2 spells of unrelenting pace and accuracy. There were many nominations made in June...all for the same person.
Well done Jermaine and many congratulations on being North London’s Jack Petchey achievement award winner for June.
Frankie Fraser the award winner for May spent the prize money on 3 full sets of wicket keeping equipment (covering different age groups) and used the remaining money to purchase new balls for the bowling machine. Thank you Frank and well done.
May 2007: Frankie Fraser
I’m delighted to announce the May recipient of the Jack Petchey Foundation achievement award. Frankie scored heavily for the under 13’s in May and also bowled well. He is a very keen member of the team, always tries hard and he’s very helpful during training sessions. A credit to the NLCC colts, Frankie now has £200 to spend on the club.
Also, to update you on the April award winner Jack Grylls chose to spend his £200 on the following:
- New Umpire Coats for games.
- New battery for the bowling machine.

April 2007 - JACK GRYLLS
I'm delighted to announce the winner of NLCC's first Jack Petchey Foundation award. There were 3 nominations and from those nominations Jack Grylls was unanimously selected as the winner. Jack has taken on the
administration of the NLCC website and done sterling work, both in developing the site and in ensuring updated player availability information has been available to selectors. It's no accident that we fielded 5 strong teams yesterday and that membership numbers and player availability are both high. It augers well for the club's future that one of our younger cricketers has stepped up to take on an important administrative role. Jack will now be encouraged to spend his £200 award on something benefitting NLCC in the very near future.
I'll let you all know what Jack has chosen to spend the money on in my next update, in the meantime let's try and get a few nominations coming in for May - the season is well underway, there will be lots of cricket played in the month and lots of opportunities to nominate 11-25 year olds.
