Jack Petchey 2008

Jack Petchey Leader Award 2008

Bob Pederson makes a huge contribution to North London Cricket Club.  In his many roles, (manager of the junior section of the club, captain of the 3rd team, occasional grounds man, committee member, coach, trainer of coaches, general organiser, administrator and county representative) Bob exemplifies the spirit of amateur sport.  He is a major reason why the club continues to thrive and why NLCC is so good at developing and encouraging young players and ensuring they learn the game in a safe and supportive environment.

Measuring Bob’s commitment to the club is straightforward.  Visit the club on a Summer Sunday and 120 youngsters (male and female, well equipped and enjoying their cricket) and 30 coaches (qualified coaches - all CRB approved) will be dispersed around the ground, learning, practising and enjoying the game.  This happens thanks to Bob’s hard work, organisation and leadership.  Visit the ground on a midweek evening and Bob will be there – overseeing a practise session, umpiring a junior game, scoring, coaching, encouraging and cajoling.  Visit the ground on a Saturday and he’ll be playing – batting stoically, wicket keeping trenchantly and leading enthusiastically.  On top of that he manages to attend meetings (committee meetings, selection meetings, regional cricket association meetings, coaches meetings) and then do the vital coordination and administration work that these meetings generate.  And that’s just the Summer...

In the Winter Bob organises and attends junior practice nets, adult practice nets, indoor leagues, and regional competitions.  He organises training for new coaches, he makes sure that all at the club are aware of child protection legislation and he gets umpires to visit the club and discuss the laws of the game.  Bob continues to work hard for NLCC throughout the Winter thus making sure that so many others enjoy their cricket and play it at in a safe, fun and organised environment.

Somehow Bob also manages to find time to help out on the ground - he mows the outfield, rolls the square, marks out wickets, cleans out changing rooms and organises the kit.  All this so from April-September each year hundreds of people, young and old enjoy their cricket at NLCC.

Fortunately for all of us at NLCC Bob is part of a supportive and involved family.  His wife Judith is a level 2 coach and makes a significant contribution to junior cricket at NLCC (this includes being the lead organiser of summer coaching schools) Both the Pederson’s sons (Ralph and Angus) play cricket at NLCC and are emerging as talented players to watch for the future.

We believe Bob Pederson would be a worthy and deserving winner of a Jack Petchey Leader Award.  He truly is an unsung hero without whom NLCC would be a lot poorer.  This award will be very well received within the club and would give NLCC an opportunity to thank Bob publicly.

Jack Petchey Achievement Award December 2008

A slightly unusual award this month but to acknowledge the fine efforts of key members of our under 13s girls’ squad the following players are joint winners of the December award: Kirsten Roussow, Lily Malick, Tegen Short and Jessica Black.

All of the above were successful in being selected for the Middlesex under 13s squad at the recent trials – Kirsten, Lily and Tegen retaining their places having been selected the year before as year 7s and Jessica winning a place for the first time having worked consistently at her game over the past 2 years.   All four of them also turned out for NLCC Boys' Under 13  teams, making useful contributions, developing their games and successfully ‘flying the flag’ for girls' section.

Kirsten, Lily, Tegen and Jessica plan to get together soon and will decide jointly how to spend their money.  In the meantime, congratulations to all of you and all the best for a successful season on 2009.

Jack Petchey Achievement Award Winner November 2008:

Maaz Haffeji

20 year old fast bowler Maaz Haffeji is the achievement award winner for November.  Maaz had a terrific season culminating in him being awarded first team player of the season at the annual awards dinner in November.

Maaz bowls fast and straight, bats aggressively and is an irrepressible and energetic presence on and off the field – a great asset to any team.  In 2008 Maaz played in every first team game taking 24 league wickets (including a best of 5 for 22 against Richmond), scoring 154 runs (including a brutal 72 against Shepherds Bush) and also completing 3 catches.

His enthusiasm and commitment to the team are exemplary and it’s great for NLCC that this young talent continues to thrive.

Well done Maaz and congratulations on your award.  Maaz wins a certificate and medallion and also £300 to spend on the club.

Jack Petchey Achievement Award Winner: October 2008

Ben Tinkler-Davis.

Ben Tinkler-Davis is a talented 11 year old who scored runs and took wickets with great consistency throughout the 2008 season.  His great efforts included including one match in which he batted through the entire innings.

Ben’s performances have brought him to the attention of the county selectors and he is currently attending Middlesex’ practice sessions.

Ben brings an excellent attitude to his cricket and is an asset to the club.

Well done Ben and congratulations on your award.  Ben wins a certificate and medallion and also £300 to spend on the club.

Jack Petchey Achievement Award Winner: September 2008

I’m delighted to announce that James Kee is the award winner for September.  James had an outstanding season – he began it as a 4th team and under 15 cricketer (and occasional first team scorer) and ended it having led the under 15 XI to a memorable season, made his first team debut and accumulated almost 1000 runs for the club.

James is intelligent, committed and very competitive, both as a person and as a cricketer.  His contributions to the club both on and off the field will, I’m sure, continue to grow and he’s a worthy winner of the September award.

James now has £300 to spend on the club in the manner of his choosing.

Jack Petchey Achievement Award: August 2008

Another outstanding young cricketer has won the Jack Petchey achievement award for August.

Ted Greally scored 114 not out last Saturday in a fantastic (and chanceless)
innings for the 5ths.

He then went on to take 3 wickets in a consistent spell of tight bowling.

With talent of this quality emerging into the senior teams via the under 13's the future for the club is looking bright.

Well done Ted, you have £300 to spend on the club

July Award Winner: Simon Gardiner

The award for July 2008 goes to Simon Gardiner.  This award is unusual in that the nomination was generated by an email from outside the club before being endorsed by both Bernie Chapman and Bob Pedersen.   The email below is self explanatory:

 Dear Bob,

I would like to put on record that your U17 Captain, Simon Gardiner is a
credit to North London Colts and to the spirit of cricket. Very
competitive and a special young gentleman.

We have played your team in three closely contested matches this year
and in many more over the past years and win or lose he has always kept
his composure and friendly nature. His leadership rubs off on the team
as a whole.

I would like to wish all your U17 boys all the best for their A levels
next year and in their Senior cricketing days ahead.

Thanks also to Roger and Steven - we all do our best and it's been fun.

Kind rgds,

Herman Schey
Hampstead Colts U17 Manager.

Well done Simon, congratulations on your award –this is a real credit to the club.

June Award Winner: Finn Blythe

Congratulations to Finn who is our Jack Petchey achievement award winner for June.  Finn was nominated for his superb innings of 98 not out against local rivals Hornsey in an under 13(A) fixture.  This is a wonderful effort in 20 over cricket and it was largely thanks to Finn’s effort that we won the match.  Well done Finn, you now have £300 to spend on the club.

May Award Winner: Charlie Freeman

Congratulations to Charlie Freeman - the Jack Petchey achievement award winner for May.

In Charlie’s first season of adult cricket he has starred in each of his first 3 games scoring 41 not out, 53 not out and 70.  This is a truly outstanding performance and all the more impressive when you consider that Charlie is still only an under 13s cricketer.

In addition to his terrific batting efforts in May Charlie has also been described as a very promising bowler with an excellent attitude and as ‘a dream to captain’.

Well done Charlie, you now have £300 to spend on the club

April 2008: Matt Rosson

Congratulations to Matt Rosson who is our Achievement Award winner for April.  Matt was nominated after his impressive debut for the first team in the pre-season fixture against local rivals North Middlesex. Here is an extract from the match report:

..certain to join (the first team squad)  in the future is 15 year old Matt Rosson, who made his debut for the 1XI in this match. He fielded well, was enthusiastic and encouraging to his team mates, sent down 6 very tidy overs while the heat was on, and can bat a bit too.

Matt has made consistent progress in recent seasons in both Junior and Adult cricket and is poised to establish himself in the upper echelons of NLCCs senior teams.

Well done Matt (and here’s to a great season in 2008)

March 2008: Andrew Norman

Picking a winner for March was easy – we received multiple nominations for the same candidate!

Here are some extracts from the nominations:

“I would like to nominate Andrew Norman, one of the U17s for the March award. Andrew has worked very hard on his game (off spin) during the winter nets since joining us as an U16 last season, having not previously had formal coaching or played much cricket”.

"He attended the U17 nets, the Senior nets and had additional and extra net sessions and has shown a quiet yet steely determination to improve.  His hard work paid off in his debut U17 match v Highgate last Friday evenig in the Cup, when he started with a wicket maiden"

Andrew is 17 and had played only one game of cricket in his life until Friday last. On Friday night, in a Fifteen15 thrash Cup match against Highgate which NLCC won, he bowled his flighted off breaks and ended 3-1-2-15. Two spinner's wickets - a skied catch and a stumping”.

“He deserves recognition for his will to learn and to train. If he sticks with cricket he will get wickets regularly in senior cricket. He is a worthy recipient of the award.”

Enough said!

Well done Andrew, enjoy spending your £300 award on NLCC.

February 2008: Kirsten Rossouw

Congratulations to Kirsten Rossouw who is our February winner of the Jack Petchey achievement award.  Kirsten is one of the star players in NLCC’s girls squad and has been excelling this Winter at indoor cricket.  Here is an extract from the nomination submitted by Judith Pedersen:

“I would like to nominate Kirsten Rossouw for her excellent performances in
indoor cricket at the London Youth Games for the February winner of the Jack
Petchey award

Kirsten, representing Haringey, batted magnificently in all 3 qualifying
games reaching 20 not out before retiring. She also opened the bowling
taking wickets and her quick fielding also produced run outs. These
performances enabled Haringey Girls Team to qualify for the Finals at Lords
for the first year ever”

Well done Kirsten, you now have £300 to spend on the club.

January: Sean Beckett

The first winner of the new increased monthly sum of £300 is Sean Beckett.  Sean is a very promising all round cricketer and has shown excellent form in January in the Junior indoor league.  Although Sean bowls and fields well it was with the bat that he really shone, top scoring with 27 in the Hornsey game (in an opening stand of 73) and retiring on 32* in the thumping victory over Mill Hill Village.  Sean has been described as "a gritty performer" with an "excellent attitude" by his coaches - definitely a player you'd want in your team.  Well done and many congratulations to you Sean.
