A cold and windswept day punctuated by prolonged spells of drizzle tested the resolve of both sets of players. But in the end it seemed strangely appropriate to open the season with hats and fleeces.
North London could take many positives from this crushing 9 wicket win. Haffeji's opening spell was full of promise, swinging the ball both ways at a lively pace, while Tom Wakeford got some overs in his legs at the other end. The spin twins didnt really suit the wet seamers wicket but both bowled well, showing good control of length. Simon Moore bowled really well at the death in a smooth 8 over spell. All the bowlers could have had another W in the right hand column but for some shocking catching and general rustiness in the field. Jim Green excepted who took a fine diving catch at mid off. Desmine top scored for Highgate stroking 67* and looking a very fine bat, while the openers Sharland (23) and Holly (37) briefly shone.
To be fair the wet ball and heavy turf in the outfield did not help the fielders and Highgate struggled just as much during a century opening stand from North London openers Patrick Mills 88 and Jack Godfrey-Wood 53*. Highgate were not at full strength and their change bowlers really suffered as the openers scattered the wet ball to all parts. A ten wicket win beckoned.
When Mills fell just short of a brutal hundred, Godfrey-Wood having reached an excellent fifty retired "hurt". The run rate barely suffered and Norths made light work of the chase as Johns finished the match with a six to win by 9 wickets with 14 overs to spare.
