North Middlesex v NLCC 1XI on Sat 10 May 2008 at 1pm
NLCC Lost by 4 wkts
NLCC won the toss and batted on a sweltering hot day. The pitch was two paced and the ground had been set up with enormous square boundaries and short straight ones.
Both NL openers looked well set only to fall LBW after some confident check drives. Johns clattered a run a ball 25 including a straight six off the opposing skipper before falling to a tame gift of a catch to point. Gill and Askew were needlessly run out and the middle order collapsed to leave NL 86-7 before AK-47 reached the wicket. Hitting 5 collosal sixes and showing a sound all round technique Ahmed top scored with 40 to carry NL to 135 all out in 45.2 overs - a score probably 40 short of par but sufficient to give NL some hope.
The first and second wicket partnerships for North Middx proved decisive as the opening bats resisted stoutly and built a patient stand. North Middx then collapsed themselves from 127-2 to 134-6 to underline how close NL had come to an upset. Jon Scantlebury was the best of the bowlers and was very unlucky to be denied a hat trick with a great shout for LBW .
In the final analysis NL were guilty of wastefullness both with the bat and in the field. To underline the point North Middx conceded just 6 extras in 45 overs while NL donated 31 sundries in a disappointing opening to the league season.
